Learn to skipper. Properly.

Practical sailing training with an instructor authorised by the Slovak Ministry of Transport — who also examines for the licence you are working towards.

Almost everyone who wants to skipper a boat has the same gap. Passing a written test is one thing. Bringing a 45-footer alongside in a crosswind, with an audience on the quay and your family watching from the foredeck, is another. This training exists for that gap.

Five students, five days, one boat, and enough repetition that the manoeuvres stop being something you have seen and start being something you can do.

What we run

Three ways in

Practical training for the VNRP licence, category C

For complete beginners through to candidates preparing for the exam.

  • 5 full days
  • Croatia
  • Max 5 students
  • A cabin each
  • Boat from 43 ft
  • From €950

Five full days on the water in real conditions, not a classroom with a whiteboard. The boat is at least 43 feet and every student gets their own cabin, so the group never goes above five and everyone gets the helm properly rather than in turns of two minutes.

  • Berthing, springing off and harbour manoeuvres, and how wind direction and strength change all of them
  • Sail handling, reefing and boat trim in whatever the week gives us
  • Navigation, passage planning and weather
  • Safety, man-overboard and what to do when equipment fails
  • Crew work and watchkeeping
  • A debrief after every exercise — what went wrong and how to avoid it next time

Because Michal is authorised to conduct the category C examination, the training and the exam sit with the same instructor. Price is from €950 per person and depends on the date.

Intensive manoeuvring course

For skippers who hold a licence but do not yet trust themselves in a marina.

  • 2 days
  • Croatia
  • Ask for dates and price

Two days of almost nothing but close-quarters work: coming alongside, leaving a tight berth, turning the boat in its own length, and reading what the wind is doing between the pontoons. It is the shortest route from "I have the paper" to "I am not dreading the arrival".

Theory — Seamanship and Navigation

Taught with kapitani.sk, in Slovak.

Michal teaches the Seamanship (Plavebná náuka) and Navigation modules for kapitani.sk, holding Ministry of Transport authorisation for those subjects in categories B and C — B covering sea passages. The theory and the practical training are separate courses, and either can come first.

Each course takes five students, because every student has their own cabin on board.

How it runs

Real situations, not simulations

You do it, not watch it

The instructor stays deliberately out of the way while you work the boat. Stepping in early is comfortable for everyone and teaches nothing. Afterwards we take the manoeuvre apart — what happened, what caused it, what to do differently.

Repetition until it is yours

Every manoeuvre gets repeated until every person on board can do it alone and expects it to work. Seeing something demonstrated once is not the same as owning it, and the difference shows the first time you arrive somewhere unfamiliar in a blow.

Whatever the sea gives us

Twenty knots and a lumpy sea are not a reason to stay in the marina; they are the lesson. Training in easy conditions only teaches you how to sail in easy conditions.

Questions we get asked

Do I need any experience to start?

No. The five-day practical training regularly takes people who have never been at sea, alongside candidates already preparing for the exam. Group size is capped at five precisely so that beginners are not left behind.

Which licence does this lead to?

The Slovak VNRP licence — veliteľ rekreačného námorného plavidla, the recreational sea skipper licence — category C. Michal is authorised by the Ministry of Transport to teach the Seamanship and Navigation subjects for categories B and C, and to conduct the category C examination.

What boat do you train on, and how many of us are there?

A yacht of at least 43 feet, with a cabin for every student. That puts a hard limit of five students on a course, so nobody spends the week waiting for a turn at the helm.

Is the theory included in the price?

No — theory and practical training are separate courses. Michal teaches the Seamanship and Navigation modules with kapitani.sk, in Slovak, and either course can be taken first.

What does it cost?

The five-day practical training starts at €950 per person and varies with the date. Ask us about the intensive two-day manoeuvring course, which is priced separately.
